Back to School Reads

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

It’s that time of year… back to school season! When kids sport fresh haircuts and new outfits, teachers deck out their classrooms, and parents finally catch a break from the chaos of summer. But these days, August looks a little bit different. As Palm Beach County School District commits to a few weeks of virtual learning, it might be a while before we’re back in our beloved classrooms.

So how will we make the most of these ‘unprecedented times’? Students can still rock their back-to-school haircuts over Zoom, even if they can’t show off some cool sneakers. The virtual world offers tons of brand new teaching opportunities for educators. And parents… well, just know we’re keeping you in our thoughts!

But there’s one surefire way for all of us to reconnect with our schools and classrooms: reading! And our BAM authors are here to help. We’ve picked out a few books that’ll immerse you in the hustle and bustle of back to school, even if we can’t be there in person. Read on for our recommendations!

Delve into the bold and brutal Roman-inspired military academy of An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.

Check out Shaun David Hutchinson’s At the Edge of the Universe, where a lab partners love story meets apocalyptic threat.

You thought middle school was tough? Try battling the forces of evil! Follow one girl’s epic journey when Maya and the Rising Dark drops this September.

Missing school sports? Speed through Ghost by Jason Reynolds and the rest of his Track series.

Jeff Zentner explores tragedy and grief on top of the usual high school drama in Goodbye Days. Warning: bring tissues!

Looking for an emotionally charged high school romance? Try Brigid Kemmerer’s Letters to the Lost.
